2024 Packers roster ranking, 80-72: new beginnings for several roster hopefuls
The Leap ranks the Green Bay Packers' 90-man roster in order of player caliber.
With the Green Bay Packers on break until training camp and the personnel essentially frozen for the foreseeable future, The Leap will use this time to reveal its annual 90-man roster rankings.
Our methodology: We ordered the players based on ability relative to their respective positions rather than the value of those positions. Put another way, this exercise prioritizes the "best" players, not necessarily the "most valuable" ones. That means the starting quarterback doesn't necessarily have to top the list because of the position he plays.
Each edition of the 90-man roster ranking will include a batch of roughly 10 players. Due to voting ties, some batches will feature slightly more or less.
Today's slate features a combination of players with experience on other NFL teams as well as roster hopefuls with little to no pro experience entering the 2024 season.
80. Kenneth Odumegwu
Position: defensive end
How acquired: International Player Pathway program (2023)
Though a year has passed since Kenneth Odumegwu began his NFL odyssey, much remains unknown about him. A defensive end assigned to the Packers via the International Player Pathway program, Odumegwu didn't begin playing football until arriving in Green Bay. Understandably, that made him a long shot for the 53-man roster in 2023, though he enters the new year a little better prepared for the challenge.
"It's been nothing short of amazing, to be honest," Odumegwu told Packers.com earlier this year. "It's more than I expected it to be. I've really come a long way, integrating with the team. Getting to know my teammates more, them having trust in me. Learning football, living in Green Bay, it's been a great experience."
Odumegwu doesn't officially count toward the Packers' 90-man roster nor will he count against their practice squad if he again falls short of making the 53. For that reason, the team has little incentive to burn a roster spot on him during the regular season unless he has taken a gigantic leap entering Year 2.
79. Tyler Coyle
Position: safety
How acquired: street free agent (2023)
Technically, Tyler Coyle has seen NFL action. The former undrafted free agent played 93 combined defensive and special-teams snaps between 2021 and '22 as a member of the Dallas Cowboys, though that small sample hardly illustrates what type of player Coyle could become. The Packers signed him to their practice squad late last season where he remained through the divisional round.
Despite Green Bay almost completely remodeling their safety room, Coyle faces an uphill battle for a roster spot. Presumably, he'll begin training camp behind Xavier McKinney, the team's three draft picks at the position, and the three deep reserves who spent time on the 53 last season. Coyle will need to make a major impact on special teams just to garner more than cursory consideration.
