This is Part 2 of a two-part series on the wide-receiver position in the upcoming 2022 NFL draft, where we expect GM Brian Gutekunst to attack the receiver position aggressively following the trade of Davante Adams. We gave you the “what” and the “why",” on Wednesday. Today, you’ll get the “who,” as is in who fits the mold and projects most favorably the NFL.
There’s looking the part and there’s playing the part. Plenty of players in the NFL test like great players or look in flashes like high-impact pieces, but can’t match it with consistency or technique or both. Receiver is particularly like that, where the best athletes are rarely the best technicians. That’s why teams like the Packers prize traits based on athletic molds that have historically succeeded. To take it to the next level, we can layer on the statistical profiles of college players who translated that success to the pros.
On Wednesday, I wrote about the predictive value of metrics like Dominator and Breakout Age, which are exactly what they sound like: how much of your team’s yardage and scoring do you account for, and at what age did you start producing at a high level. The more and the earlier the better.
