Let's talk about the Packers' Za'Darius Smith conundrum … again
With Rashan Gary ailing and Whitney Mercilus out for the season, the Packers need Za'Darius Smith more than ever before. But when will the Pro Bowl pass rusher return?
While the Green Bay Packers exited Week 10 with a victory over the Seattle Seahawks, their defense absorbed some significant blows along the way. Rashan Gary, a former No. 12 overall pick in the midst of a breakout season, suffered what appeared to be a devastating elbow injury during the fourth quarter. Gary's departure followed an early exit by Whitney Mercilus, who hurt his bicep shortly after halftime.
A few days later, the Packers received mixed news on the two injured pass rushers. Gary learned he only hyperextended his elbow and could return as soon as Sunday's tilt with the Minnesota Vikings. Conversely, Mercilus' injury will require surgery and will end this season.
While Gary will play again this season, the combined effect of the injuries at this point in the year would normally deplete the defensive front and leave the team with no available remedy until the offseason. However, the Packers possess a potential fallback plan: Pro Bowl pass rusher Za'Darius Smith.
