Where the Nathaniel Hackett and Luke Getsy stand in coaching searches and how the Packers might replace them

Packers assistants Nathaniel Hackett and Luke Getsy interviewed for head-coaching positions last week. Where do they stand in those searches and how might Green Bay replace them?

Though the Green Bay Packers will soon take the field for a divisional-round showdown with the San Francisco 49ers, the NFL hiring cycle has influenced how key members of the coaching staff have spent their time over the past two weeks. Two prominent members of the Packers' coaching staff, Nathaniel Hackett and Luke Getsy, have interviewed for head-coaching positions during the downtime. If one or both depart Green Bay, head coach Matt LaFleur will soon have to find quality replacements.

That process could take several weeks and involve a cavalcade of candidates, both internal and external. Hackett and/or Getsy accepting jobs elsewhere could kick off a feeding frenzy, with the Packers losing additional coaches to the staffs their former assistants construct in their new NFL homes. While those concerns rank behind winning the Super Bowl this year, they certainly remain in the back of LaFleur's mind.

So where do Hackett and Getsy stand in the coaching searches for which they've interviewed? Where might the Packers look to find replacements should they depart? The Leap spoke with contacts around the league to best answer these questions.

Status of Packers' assistants in coaching searches

At present, Hackett has interviewed with four different teams about their head-coaching positions, including two jobs within the Packers' division. Where he stands in some of those races remains difficult to ascertain, as the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings are concurrently running general-manager searches. How Hackett ultimately fares in those places will largely reflect how the respective franchises choose to organize their football operations.

However, Hackett has gained serious traction with the Jacksonville Jaguars. According to sources informed of the situation, the Packers' offensive coordinator has made the shortlist of candidates the Jaguars will consider for their head-coaching vacancy, with Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich and Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus also considered among the favorites. Back in September, The Leap reported that Hackett remains well regarded by ownership and could emerge as a replacement for Urban Meyer should Jacksonville part ways. The team fired Meyer in December.
