Who could the Packers target from other teams during final cuts?

Who could the Packers target from other teams during final cuts?

Over the next few days, more than 40% of players currently on NFL rosters will hit the transaction wire. This offers the Packers an opportunity to hunt for some gems.

In less than a week, every NFL locker room will look substantially different from what it does today. Teams have until Tuesday at 3 p.m. CT to shrink their rosters to a maximum of 53 players, a reduction of over 40%. No date in the calendar sees more turnover leaguewide.

Already, NFL decision-makers have begun trimming their rosters in preparation for cutdown day. This week saw a flurry of trades for players who would have otherwise missed the final cut next week. Defensive linemen Jowon Briggs and Harrison Phillips joined the New York Jets within a few hours of each other. Skyy Moore and Devaughn Vele moved from crowded receiving corps to the more spartan units of the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints, respectively. Most likely, even more deals will go down in the coming days.

Not all of the excess useful players will find new homes via trade, however. Many more will receive a visit from the "Turk" and end up waived or, if they have at least four accrued seasons, released. In the majority of cases, these players reach the open market and look for a spot on a practice squad, often with the team that just cut them.

While the Green Bay Packers typically seem more interested in retaining a handful of their recently cut players than pursuing those jettisoned from other teams, final cuts do offer a chance to hunt for gems, and a handful of potential upgrades could soon hit the transaction wire.
